Mission

Our mission is to guarantee young people access to safe and accurate information.

In this age of Google, Yelp and Wikipedia, this should not be a problem.

It is.

There is more information available than ever before but it is unfiltered, with no guarantee of safety and it is not made accessible to youth.

iMapAmerica puts tools in the hands of young people that allow them to actively engage in knowledge transfer by mapping organizations and opportunities in their communities that are relevant to their needs and interests.  The result is not only better information, but also a renewed sense of engagement and accountability that is shared by those who map and those who are mapped.

Mapping is an essential tool in guaranteeing young people the best education in and out of school.  While great schools and great teachers make a big difference in how young people reach their full potential, young people are in school at best 15% of their time.  The majority of their time is lived in their community with family and friends.

Youth need to know what’s there: the library, the recreation center. tutoring locations, etc.

Adults need to know what’s there and what is not there; we need to know if that library is open on Saturday and exactly how many young people can use it . A community with a closed library and gym on a Saturday will not welcome the most competitive students on Monday morning.

Mapping allows youth to be their own demographers with youth moving from under the microscope to behind it.  Mapping is primal civic engagement with youth impacting their future, their community and the world beyond.
